Following on from '90 Degrees’, we’re pleased to present another new track from the wonderful Yazmin Lacey. This one entitled ‘Something My Heart Trusts’.
The past year has been somewhat of a whirlwind for the Brownswood 'Future Bubblers' graduate; the release of her debut EP, 'Black Moon' lead to a live Maida Vale session along with Jordan Rakei, Moses Boyd, Oscar Jerome and Children of Zeus. 2018 kicked off with a performance at the Worldwide Awards with Skinny Pelembe, and she’s recently done shows with artists such as Ezra Collective, Tall Black Guy and Fatima, as well of course as signing to First Word Records. Yazmin is on the road throughout Spring for a run of dates across the UK, as well as several festival appearances across Europe locked in, including Soundwave, Field Day and Dimensions, and a recent headline show at Rich Mix in London.
In the past month, Yazmin has made live appearances on Jazz FM, BBC Radio 4, Netil Radio and NTS in the UK, and '90 Degrees' received widespread acclaim on the airwaves across the globe, including BBC Radio 2, BBC 6 Music, BBC 1Xtra, Worldwide FM, Solar Radio and Mi-Soul, plus Spotify love from The Independent, State of Jazz, Fresh Finds and New Music Friday, and strong support from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Jamz Supernova, Tom Ravenscroft, Huey Morgan and Jamie Cullum, amongst many. Yazmin was also featured heavily in The Guardian / Observer's recent extensive article on the UK's new Jazz movement.
This next offering again exemplifies just why Yazmin is catching the ear of so many international DJs and tastemakers, with her candid approach to songwriting, and a unique fusion of Neo-Soul and contemporary Jazz.
In Yazmin's words: "'Something My Heart Trusts' is about instinct. You may be moving forward alone, but you’ll know every step if you trust your heart..."
lyrics
You won't shut the fuck up
And I won't let you in
Somethings got to change this is sink or swim
And I know that Somethings got to change
So meet me in the middle
You won't shut the fuck up
And I won't let you in
Somethings got to change this is sink or swim
And I know that Somethings got to change
So meet me in the middle
You're too far in the present
I'm way in the past
I have been feeling myself
I want this to last
Is it the change?
Is it the change?
Remain the same
Can we remain the same
You're too far in the present
I'm way in the past
I have been feeling myself
I want this to last
Is it the change?
Is it the change?
Remain the same
Can we remain the same
ah-ah ah-ah ah-ahhhhhh
Somethings got to give
Somethings got to give
Somethings got to give
Somethings got to give
Somethings got to change
To something my heart trusts
To something my heart trusts
To something my heart trusts
To something my heart trusts
Somethings got to give
Something my heart trusts
Something my heart trusts
To something my heart trusts
oooohhh ooohhhhh ooohhhhh
To something my heart trusts

Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Great grooves and I can see lots of ghosts nodding along to this with big smiles on their faces. At last! Anthony Cottrell
